An on-duty San Gabriel Police Department officer was injured this morning when his motorcycle and a car collided at an intersection in Canyon Country, a local sheriff’s spokesman said.

Hurt in the crash was San Gabriel Police Department Officer Steven Rodrigues, said the Department’s Lt. Chris Ortell.

Southbound lanes of Whites Canyon Road were reopened to traffic about noon today after being shut down all morning while law enforcement investigators from both the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and the San Gabriel Police Department scrutinized the crash site, said sheriff’s Lt. John Rush.

The car and police motorcycle collided on Whites at Ranier Street about 7 a.m., Lt. Mark Hershey said early in the investigation.

“He had a broken left leg, a broken right foot, minor abrasions and a concussion,” the lieutenant said.

At least two officers with the San Gabriel Police Department visited their injured fellow officer at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital before heading out to the crash site, Hershey said.

“They’re going there to collect the rest of his stuff,” he said.

The injured police officer was on his way to work and thus considered on duty, Ortell told The Signal.

Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics received the first call about the crash via cellphone at 6:48 a.m., said Supervisor Kyle Sanford.

The injured police officer was transported to Henry Mayo at 7:09 a.m. No one else was taken to the hospital from the scene.
