While led on nature hikes in the Santa Clara River bed adjacent to their school in Canyon Country, Rio Vista Elementary students became concerned with the graffiti and pollution they observed.

Consequently, in an effort to clean up their environment, students, with the guidance of the Santa Clarita Valley Graffiti Task Force, will spend the morning of, Friday, March 6 painting and picking up trash in the wash and around campus.

Upper-grade Student Council members, EcoKids and 4th-6th grade students will painting over graffiti and K-3rd grade students will pick up trash.

Each group of students will rotate through the tasks with their teachers/advisors and work for about 30 minutes.

All students are required to return a volunteer permission form, provided by the City of Santa Clarita, prior to March 6, in order to participate.

Participating students should go to school Friday in clothes appropriate for the day's tasks: old tennis shoes, jeans, t-shirts, baseball caps, etc.

The clean-up day is an event leading up to Rio Vista's third annual Environmental Awareness and Career Day, sponsored by the National Hispanic Environmental Council, on April 3.
