Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in a single-crash that killed a Neenach man Saturday night near Lake Hughes, an officer with the California Highway Patrol said.

John Edgar Cubano, 47, died after his car left the roadway then crashed into an embankment, a fence and a tree, said CHP Officer Jennifer Cassidy.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Cubano was travelling westbound on Pine Canyon Road at an unknown speed and under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, Cassidy said reading from a report filed by CHP investigators at the Newhall Station.

“He was travelling at an unsafe speed for the prevailing roadway,” she said.

“He crossed into the eastbound lanes, onto the dirt shoulder, colliding into a dirt embankment,” she said, reading the report.

“His vehicle continued westbound and collided with a chain link fence. As the vehicle continued westbound the driver’s side of the vehicle collided into a tree.

“That collision caused his vehicle to continue westbound and overturn,” she said.

Emergency response units found the car resting on its driver’s side.

Cubano died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash, Cassidy said.

He lives in the community of Neenach, about five miles north of where the fatal crash occurred, according to the CHP.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call CHP Investigating Officer Bone at the Newhall Station at 661-294-5540.
