Steve Lunetta: I quit

For years now, I have been writing this column in an effort to change hearts and minds about the direction our country is headed. At the inception, the concept was to write a light-hearted weekly diatribe that subtly influenced opinion in the SCV.

Some of you thought this writing was simple-minded and weak. I can write extremely technical and verbose prose at my discretion but I chose not to. It’s boring to write and even more boring to read.

Most news and magazine copy in this country is written to a 6th grade level. That’s rather pathetic when you think about it. I tried submitting a few pieces in crayon to make it easier for liberals to read but the Signal would not accept it. Guess it was too high-brow for our local leftists.

I can see now that the effort was futile. Self-centered liberalism that basks in the glory of cancerous entitlement programs is corrupting our Republic to the core.

Unfortunately, we have all been poisoned by the ubiquitous government hand-outs. Our first response is to extend our greedy palms toward Uncle Sam and not look in the mirror to determine a self-directed course of action that will resolve our problems.

The corruption runs so deep that it is no longer a matter of which politician will give us a hand-out. The question is which politician will give us the bigger hand-out.

And all through these bigger entitlements, no one asks the common sense question- how do we pay for all of this? Liberals tell us to tax the evil corporations, tax the filthy rich, spend more money, and all of our dreams will come true.

Then, they wonder why corporations move, downsize, or die taking jobs and tax revenues down with them.

They wonder why rich people move to other states with more friendly personal income tax structures. They wonder why we can never balance a budget.

I see and hear the liberals in our community and in the media decry austerity and common sense solutions to our problems.

They point to Europe as an example of how austerity has ruined countries like Greece.

Greece.

A country that routinely spent far more than it created while borrowing heavily to fund its largess. When forced to live within its means, the people rioted. And our liberals shake their heads, utter a "tsk, tsk," and blame the austerity measures as the root cause of the crisis.

We are now faced with ever-increasing government intrusion into our lives. The President of the United States directly lies about the scope, impact, and depth of a broad information-gathering program on national television and the nation is silent.

We have surrendered a piece of our collective soul for the sake of a false sense of security. Our government has a weapon that can be turned at will upon any one of us to defame, discredit, and destroy. And no one cares.

Writers on this opinion page pen toxic columns on the evils of the Republican Party and conservative values often with arguments that are comical and outlandish but few step forward to refute the crackpot epistles.

On the other hand, many of the folks that could make an impact stick their heads in the sand and refuse to compromise.

There are many things that we conservatives could re-think and come up with a better approach but we are often stuck with concepts that do not play well to a younger demographic.

If we were a bit more flexible, our common-sense would win out and carry the day.

Liberal thinking would be exposed as the vacuous, selfish, short-sighted claptrap that usually results in disaster not success.

Writing this column has given me the opportunity to speak to many of you and hear your thoughts and opinions. Your ideas are good and you should be sharing them. Don’t let a select few people keep spewing the same stuff all the time.

Get involved. Write a letter to the editor. Volunteer to write a column. The Signal will print it.

So, in summary, I bid you all a fond farewell. Psych. You didn’t think I was going to leave that easily. Who would routinely abuse the Democrats?
