Michael D. Berger, president of the Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees, has announced he will seek re-election to the governing board that oversees College of the Canyons.

A longtime college supporter who has been active on many civic and volunteer fronts throughout the community, Berger was first elected to the board in 2009. Before that, he served on the College of the Canyons Foundation Board of Directors for 20 years.

“It has been extremely gratifying to have played a role in College of the Canyons’ progress and achievements over the past 24 years,” said Berger, senior vice president, senior investment management specialist and financial advisor for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.

“I’m particularly proud that we have been vigilant stewards of the college’s finances while, at the same time, maintaining its reputation for excellence and innovation in higher education,” said Berger, whose experience in the financial services industry has provided invaluable insight and guidance in his role as a member of the board’s Finance Committee.

“While it’s impossible to predict all of the challenges the future will bring, I am confident in my abilities to make the right decisions on behalf of our community and for the continued success of our community college,” he said. “As a proud graduate of College of the Canyons, I am humbled to have had this amazing opportunity. I look forward to continuing our work with great enthusiasm.”

Berger has held leadership positions throughout the Santa Clarita Valley for the past 30 years. He is a past president of the SCV Chamber of Commerce and served three terms on the Santa Clarita Planning Commission. His volunteer work includes serving as president of the SCV Rotary Club and as a member of the Child & Family Center and Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children’s Cancer boards of directors, among others.

His commitment to the community was recognized in 2006 when he was honored as Santa Clarita Valley Man of the Year and in 2000 when he was presented the College of the Canyons Silver Spur Award for Community Service.

The board seat will be decided when voters go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013.
