A preliminary hearing has been set for a Palmdale man accused of robbing a Newhall bank in May, a spokeswoman with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said Thursday.

Demarie Rashad Mackey, 23, appeared Thursday in San Fernando Superior Court and was ordered to return in two weeks for a preliminary hearing, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Mackey, who remains in custody at Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic with bail set at $1.1 million, pleaded not guilty to the felony robbery charge May 29.

On May 25, shortly before 10:45 a.m., a lone male with a stocking over his face and armed with a small handgun entered the Bank of America branch on Valley Street near Lyons Avenue and stole an undisclosed amount of money, Lt. Tom Bryski of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said at the time.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt during the incident.

Within 15 minutes of the holdup, deputies caught up with the suspect just north of Sand Canyon Road on the northbound Highway 14 freeway, Bryski said.

Deputies stopped a red Toyota Camry at that location and detained the driver, Mackey, at gunpoint.

Mackey is scheduled to appear July 23 for his preliminary hearing. During that hearing, prosecutors will present evidence in the case, and the defense can respond, after which the judge will decide if the case should go to trial.
