UPDATE: I-5 wrong-way driver report cleared

A wrong-way driver reported to be heading northbound in the southbound center divider of Interstate 5 righted herself and continued on, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said today.

The report came in around 12:30 p.m. in the area of Smokey Bear Road, where freeway traffic is routed to three narrow lanes in each direction that are moved back and forth across the pavement as the road is torn up and replaced, a CHP spokesman said.

Through that area, cars are sometimes traveling in opposite directions on the same side of guard rails, and it's easy for observers to mistake a car for one heading in the wrong direction, the CHP spokesman said.
