A Newhall man has been ordered to stand trial for murder in the stabbing death of another Newhall man for what turned out to be the only Santa Clarita Valley murder in 2012.

Cesar Navarro, 21, was ordered to stand trial on one count of first-degree murder during an appearance in San Fernando Superior Court on Friday,

District Attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said.

He is charged in the slaying of Franco Olea, 28, at his Newhall home on Dec. 2, 2012.

Sheriff’s investigators reported Olea stepped outside his home in response to an apparent auto burglary when he struggled with another man on his driveway and was stabbed. He died at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

Navarro, who remains in custody at the Pitchess Detention Center’s East Facility, is scheduled to appear in court July 23.

Detectives investigating the murder said early on they had an idea who the killer might be after showing a sketch of the suspect to a few people.

On the morning of Jan. 23, members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Surveillance and Apprehension Team arrested Navarro.
