Six in Santa Clarita Valley cited for possessing illegal fireworks

Even as at least three official fireworks shows lit the skies above the Santa Clarita Valley for the Fourth of July, some residents indulged in personal — and illegal — displays, leading to a busy night for Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies.

The station received 119 calls about illegal fireworks use Thursday night, said Sgt. Cortland Myers.

Those 119 calls yielded six arrests for possession of illegal fireworks, according to Myers. All six were cited, Myers said.

But despite the number of calls about illegal fireworks use, there were no reports of damage or injuries as a result.
“That was fortunate,” Myers said.

It is against state law to possess, store, use or sell most kinds of fireworks, including bottle rockets, Roman candles and firecrackers. Violations can result in a $500 fine and up to a year in jail.

But so-called “Safe and Sane” fireworks, which can be purchased and used legally in some neighboring communities on Highway 126, are also outlawed in areas served by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which includes all of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Parents can be held liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
