Santa Clarita to host elite baseball tourney

The Santa Clarita Valley will have two host sites and two local prep teams competing in one of the state’s most elite baseball tournaments this summer.

Valencia’s and West Ranch’s baseball teams will host Northern California baseball powerhouses July 19-21 in the first California Classic Elite tournament.

It’s a tournament Valencia head coach Jared Snyder talked about doing last summer so that his team could play against different and better competition during the summertime.

Six Southern California teams, including Valencia, West Ranch, Alemany, Moorpark, Harvard-Westlake and Simi Valley will host Northern California teams Archbishop Mitty, Bellarmine, De La Salle, Elk Grove, Buchanan and Clovis West.

Snyder, West Ranch head coach Casey Burrill and Harvard-Westlake head coach Matt Lacour helped get the idea off the ground.

Snyder said the coaches borrowed the idea of the elite tournament from teams up north who host similar games that teams like Valencia have played in in the past.

“The nice thing is it’s teams we don’t see all the time. We’re seeing CIF champions from Northern California, Central California. Every game’s competitive,” Snyder said.

A bonus for the kids playing in it beyond the competition is that the organizers send invites to colleges so they could come and scout the players.

Thus far, colleges Cal State Fullerton, USC, Loyola Marymount, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Santa Clara, Pepperdine, Fresno State, UC Irvine, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside have confirmed that they will have representation there, according to the event’s press release.

“What’s happening is a lot of colleges are getting tired of showcases. You get kids in showcase and they get skill stuff. Colleges needed to see more — how they react to teammates. Just to see those kids in settings with their team. They can’t do it (in showcases).”

On July 19, West Ranch will plays Clovis West of Fresno at 5 p.m.

Clovis West has finished in the state’s top 50 five of the last six seasons.

On July 20, the Wildcats start with Bellarmine Prep of San Jose at 10 a.m.

Bellarmine produced Major Leaguer and 1998 No. 1 overall MLB draft pick Pat Burrell.

At 2 p.m., West Ranch hosts 2013 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champion Elk Grove.

On July 21, the Wildcats finish up with CIF North Coast Section runner-up De La Salle of Concord at 10 a.m.

Valencia opens up with 2010 CIF-Central Coast Section champion Archbishop Mitty of San Jose on July 19 at 5 p.m.
The Vikings get Elk Grove July 20 at 10 a.m. and Bellarmine at 2 p.m.

They finish with Clovis West on July 21 at 10 a.m.

Admission for the games is $5 for adults and $3 for kids 11 and under. Senior citizens are free.

There will be a snack bar.
