A handful of prospective foster parents attended a monthly meeting about adoption and taking in foster children.
“We’re here to recruit families to become foster families,” said Melissa Salvador, a representative from the Children’s Bureau who spearheaded the meeting.
Every month potential families interested in adoption or becoming foster parents are able to attend the meeting at College of the Canyons.
“We’re providing information and just trying to get families to open up their homes,” Salvador said.
According to the seminar instructor, a fairly large community of foster and adoptive families exists in the Santa Clarita Valley.
“When families hear about the number of kids that are out there that need families, stability, nurturing, I think they feel that there is a calling for them to help kids,” Salvador said.
Many children end up in the foster care system for different reasons, she added.
“More so it’s the neglect right now, and domestic violence,” Salvador said.
The meeting covers various steps and the requirements typically taken to foster or adopt a child and some of the needs children in the foster care system have.
Salvador suggested families interested in opening up their home to a foster child attend the monthly meeting or to visit all4kids.org.
