Faculty, staff and administrators at College of the Canyons (COC) are getting in the holiday spirit with a friendly door decorating competition.

The annual competition is part of the college’s holiday party, according to James Temple, vice president of Technology at COC.

“It’s a lot of fun and people get really into it,” Temple said.  “It also helps make the campus look festive during the holidays.”

For more than six years, campus officials have used everything from wire to painter’s tape to create unique decorations that represent the season.

Temple said the rules for the competition are that the decorations are on a public facing door and are in a holiday theme.

“It’s up to the department to choose what they create,” he said.  “But it’s a general holiday theme.”

Decorations are allowed to go up to 18 inches away from the edges of the door in any direction, but the decorations cannot cause damage to the door once they are removed.

“We want to make sure that when it’s done and they take the tape off that it doesn’t affect the door or its paint,” Temple said.

This year, 35 different departments are participating in what Temple calls the most creative competition yet.

One door is decorated to replicate the Matterhorn from Disneyland and is complete with a working children’s train.

Another door by the biology department used petri dishes filled with different items to replicate ornaments on a Christmas tree, Temple said.  The department also paid tribute to

individuals who inspired them with presents at the bottom of the tree.

“Each employee put down on the tag the name of someone that influenced them to get into the field of biology,” Temple said.

Next Tuesday, COC holiday party attendees will get one ticket to vote for their favorite festive door.  Competition organizers, including Temple, will count the votes and announce the first, second and third place winners at the event.

“The winner receives the coveted door decoration first place trophy,” Temple said.

Temple believes it will hard to pick the winner this year as the doors continue to get more and more creative.

“People take it very seriously and the best part if it is that they all bring in stuff to contribute to put it together,” he said.
